Toxicology
Medical Toxicology is a diverse field encompassing the evaluation of poisoned patients. Exposures evaluated and managed as a consultant include pharmaceutical medication or natural substances including food, plant and animal toxins. Evaluation of occupational and environmental hazards including chemical, nuclear or bioterrorism are also under the domain of medical toxicology.
The Department of Emergency Medicine sponsors a fully accredited two year fellowship leading to ABEM board certification. The Medical Toxicology fellow is primarily responsible for consultations through the Drug and Poison Information Center (DPIC) at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital. The DPIC coverage encompasses over half the population of the State of Ohio including 38 counties from the greater Cincinnati, Toledo and Akron areas. An average of 11, 788 calls are received per month for exposure or drug information. Consultation is available at the University of Cincinnati and Cincinnati Children’s Hospital. Additional collaborative resources include: EPA, NIOSH, and the Hamilton County Coroner. The Division of Toxicology is also responsible for medical evaluation and control of anti-venom for the Cincinnati Zoo and Newport Aquarium. The fellow also gains experience in Hyperbaric Medicine including treating acute and chronic poisoned patients.
The Division of Toxicology sponsors bi-weekly Poison Rounds in conjunction with DPIC. Additionally, the Division sponsors an educational elective for medical students and residents. Recent, educational courses attended by the fellow and staff include hyperbaric medicine, radiation emergencies, hazmat, biochemical weapons and forensic medicine. Annual symposiums from ACMT and AACT are also attended.
Formal research training is available through the Department of Emergency Medicine as well as the Division of Toxicology. A formal biostatics course is offered to the Fellow. Collaborative research is encouraged and partnership are available through Children’s Hospital or any department in the Colleges of Medicine/ Pharmacy.
